Session Overview:

This event explores the growing cultural and linguistic diversity of Australian families and what it means for speech pathologists wishing to engage in culturally appropriate practice. The event is designed to support speech pathologists to work with multilingual children. The aim of the event is to promote a holistic and collaborative approach to engaging in effective practice with children and families from diverse backgrounds. General principles and resources for assessment and intervention will be supplemented with specific examples from different languages and contexts.

  • Gain insight about expert and innovative practices from around the world.
  • Reflect on current practices with, and services for Australian children.
  • Develop skills for culturally sensitive practice with families and communities.
  • Appreciate the need for and nature of culturally appropriate assessment practices for multilingual children who speak different languages and who come from different cultures.
  • Consider ways of developing approaches to intervention for multilingual children in everyday clinical settings.
  • Think about opportunities for interprofessional collaboration.

Who should attend:

  • Registrants must be speech pathologists.
  • Students who have had some clinical experience are welcome to register.
  • The workshop will be aimed at paediatric clinicians (but may also be applicable to adult clinicians)
