Public Health Advocacy Short Course

This skills-based and interactive online course will enable participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of advocacy concepts, frameworks and core skills, how advocacy can value add and a systematic process of planning advocacy. 

All participants will walk away from the short course with a completed advocacy framework, together with the knowledge, skills and connections on how to make it a reality. Participants will have access to highly experienced keynote presenters and hear a range of advocacy case studies to enhance their learning through the week. 

The course is designed for practitioners, researchers and policy actors who do not have an existing specialism in the advocacy field but may have a responsibility or interest in the integration of advocacy into planning, projects and policy. 

This is an online course that includes live webinar sessions, on-demand video and digital content and facilitated group activities. Participation requires a commitment to the following times:

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of what public health advocacy is
  • Demonstrate an understanding of when public health advocacy can assist to improve health & wellbeing
  • Reflect on personal attributes needed to be a good advocate or coalition member
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the different advocacy strategies
  • Demonstrate how an advocacy program can be planned using the PHAI advocacy framework

Successful completion of this Public Health Advocacy Short Course and associated assessment may be considered for recognition of prior learning equivalent to one unit in the Curtin University Master of Public Health or Graduate Diploma in Public Health.

Registered Health Promotion Practitioners may claim this course for continuing professional development (CPD) activities.

This course is delivered by the Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI), an independent public health voice based within Curtin University in Western Australia. PHAI aims to influence, build, promote, and support advocacy for public health priorities through innovation in education, applied research, engagement, and practice.
